CONGRATULATIONS TO ISAAC ROCHEVILLE

On April 25, Isaac Rocheville, the Cabrini winner of the Seventh Grade Poetry contest, read his poem with other winners from the citywide contest at the Regional Arts Commission headquarters. See his performance for yourself on U tube next week. I will post the link. Isaac was awarded $25.00, and his poem and the poems of the other winners were published in a book which can be found on the shelves of the St. Louis Public Library. Not many people are published authors with books in the public library when they are in seventh grade. Check the Snippets section below to read the poem for yourself.
THIS IS WHAT WE WILL BE WORKING ON IN THE FOURTH QUARTER:
Students are continuing independent reading in the Accelerated Reader program. Stay tuned to see if we will have new leaders in points earned. Each class is also reading a novel together: Sixth Grade-- Walk Two Moons; Seventh Grade--The Giver; Eighth Grade--To Kill a Mockingbird .
This quarter, sixth-graders will be completing magazines. Seventh-graders are writing papers on the topic of rules, and eighth-graders are writing papers on the topic of childhood games. Students need to read their rough drafts to three people and get a written response—parents, grandparents, special friends, classmates would all be good audiences. If a student asks you to listen to a paper, I hope you will have time to help out. Students continue to study vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation..
SNIPPETS--LITTLE PIECES FROM STUDENT WRITING
"Last Time" by Isaac Rocheville
Before she passed,
Late at night,
In her room.
Brother next to me,
Mom next to her.
Mom worn down from helping.
Time for Grandma was getting close.
She hadn't been awake for days.
She was pale,
Sleeping with uneasy breaths.
I knew in my heart there wasn't a lot of time,
Didn't want it to be true,
But the signs were there.
Goodnight, Grandma.
