School-Wide Curriculum Goals

Together, the faculty of St. Frances Cabrini Academy recently created a comprehensive curriculum. The curriculum builds upon the foundations of education and allows for a continuous strengthening of skills as students progress from kindergarten through the 8th grade. Below you can read the over-arching goals set forth as a part of the curriculum. Within each grade, further goals have been defined.

School-Level Goals

  • Demonstrate knowledge of Jesus Christ, His teachings, and the Catholic Church.
  • Show respect for God's creations, especially human life in all its diversity as a special gift of God.
  • Engage in sacraments and activities to help them discover their call to justice, service, and loving relationships with God and others.
  • Communicate ideas effectively, clearly, and concisely in oral and written forms.
  • Demonstrate ability to access information from a variety of sources and make practical applications of knowledge.
  • Understand and incorporate problem solving skills, critical thinking skills, and conceptual thinking skills in a variety of settings.
  • Demonstrate good citizenship while interacting positively with others and maintaining a healthy self concept.
  • Develop an awareness of and show an appreciation for the fine arts.
  • Use technology to aid in learning.
  • Engage in activities to develop an appropriate level of physical fitness.

Language Arts Goals

  • Apply word attack skills to decode new words.
  • Read with fluency and expression.
  • Apply comprehension and critical thinking skills.
  • Interpret and respond to oral and written material.
  • Recognize and appreciate the various types of contemporary and traditional literature.
  • Use and evaluate various resource materials in doing research.
  • Read for enjoyment and to gain knowledge.
  • Show an appreciation for written works and oral expression from a variety of cultures.
  • Use manuscript and cursive writing skills.
  • Use the rules of correct spelling.
  • Recognize and write a complete sentence.
  • Draft, revise, proofread, publish and present written material for various purposes and audiences.
  • Express ideas creatively in various literary genres.
  • Use standard mechanics of the language correctly.
  • Express ideas clearly and concisely in oral and written forms.
  • Participate effectively in discussions.

Math Goals

  • Identify numbers and demonstrate ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems.
  • Apply knowledge of operations to perform computations correctly.
  • Make reasonable estimates and use estimation in operations.
  • Use appropriate measurement techniques, tools and formulas to accurately calculate measurements
  • Read, design, and interpret tables, charts, and graphs.
  • Apply reasoning, strategies and functions to solve problems.
  • Demonstrate the basic concepts of probability to solve problems.
  • Demonstrate and apply an understanding of algebraic principles to real-life situations.
  • Apply knowledge of time and money to everyday situations

Science Goals

  • Apply the scientific method as a problem solving tool.
  • Use scientific instruments correctly and safely.
  • Apply scientific knowledge to personal safety and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Relate technology and scientific discoveries of the past to our current understanding of the world.
  • Compare and contrast characteristics and interactions of living organisms.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the properties and principles of matter, energy, forces, and motion.
  • Describe the processes and interactions that affect the earth and the universe.
  • Recognize the impact of science, technology, and human activity on natural resources and the environment.
  • Show respect for and apply the moral and social principles of stewardship to creation.
  • Relate scientific knowledge to everyday life.

Social Studies Goals

  • Explain how a community functions and define the roles of its members.
  • Show appreciation and respect for all cultures and their traditions.
  • Apply the tools of social science inquiry to interpret documents, maps, surveys, graphs and statistics.
  • Identify geographic and political features of the United States and the world.
  • Explain and identify the functions of our local, state, and national government.
  • Compare and contrast democracy to other forms of governance.
  • Define economic systems in terms of production, distribution, and consumption.
  • Identify significant people and events of the United States and the world.
  • Research and discuss current events as they affect our world.
  • Relate technology, scientific discoveries, and historical events to our current understanding of the world.

Religion Goals

  • Identify the role of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Trinity)
  • Demonstrate the importance of a personal relationship with God in their lives and in the life of the community. (Trinity)
  • Describe the major events in the life of Jesus and apply His teachings to their lives. (Jesus)
  • Explain how the Church carries out Jesus' mission through community, worship, and service. (Church)
  • Explain the structure of the Church and the Church's role in history. (Church)
  • Participate in the life of the faith community through liturgy and communal prayer. (Worship / Liturgy / Prayer)
  • Summarize the qualities of Mary and the saints that make them role models. (Worship / Liturgy / Prayer)
  • Explain the meaning and describe the ritual of the seven sacraments and their importance to the life of the Church. (Sacraments)
  • Participate in the sacramental life of the Church. (Sacraments)
  • Read, interpret and apply Sacred Scripture, the inspired word of God, to their lives. (Scripture)
  • Explain the basic teachings of the Church and apply those teachings to their lives. (Doctrine)
  • Apply Catholic moral teachings as a foundation for making moral decisions. (Morality)
  • Demonstrate responsible stewardship of God's creation. (Building the Kingdom)
  • Act on the basis of Catholic social justice principles in response to the Gospel call. (Building the Kingdom)
  • Exhibit a respect for all people and share with others their own Catholic faith. (Evangelization)
